Say Cruise!

Some people see life as an accumulation of memories. Whether that's true or not is beyond the scope of this article, but we can say almost without doubt that you will want to have a copy of your vacation memories on film, not just in your mind. Looking over your photographs after the cruise can bring back many pleasant feelings and help you remember details you might otherwise forget.

Here are some tips you might find useful no matter if you're an amateur photographer or a professional with sophisticated equipment and perfect knowledge of the use of light and angles. The tips do not refer to photographing techniques, but rather to the "soft" side of taking photos.

The first thing to remember is that the cruise is supposed to be a holiday, not an extended posing session. You don't need a set of photographs attesting your presence on the ship, you need a collection of photos that will help you remember the atmosphere of your cruise.

So, instead of a family photo with everyone lined up by the railing or displaying a theatrical smile at the dinner table, you should think of taking snap shots of any instance you find worth recollecting. Don't even warn anyone that you're about to take their picture - you'll have much more fun looking at those photos when your vacation is over. You may end up with a couple of blurred pictures, but even those will manage to capture the holiday spirit much better and they will tell a much nicer story than any group photo with everyone saying cheese.

Don't forget to take photos of the ship and the surroundings. Being on a boat is not an everyday experience, so you should have enough pictures to remember it later. The oceanic panorama, the crew in uniform, the porthole of your cabin should not be absent from your holiday photo album. But, again, don't just make a photographic record of the ship, try to be a little creative.

Snapshots are good for capturing a moment of fun, but when it comes to photographing the ship and the ocean, you might want to take your time to find the best angle and to use the optimal camera settings. A picture of the ocean, for instance, will be much more impressive ?and a much better memory trigger - if it shows the edge of the ship as well, or the frame of your porthole.

Finally, don't overdo it. Sophisticated cameras, professional tripods and several sets of lenses might guarantee you a set of technically perfect pictures, but unless you intend to use them in some photography contest, you might find it much more convenient to use a regular camera, or even a disposable one. When you open that album at home, you probably won't do it to review the color balance or the smoothness of the edges, but to remember the wonderful time you had on the cruise. So just relax, and say cruise!
