The Winds of Change of the Cruising Industry

Before the trend of traveling by plane, or rather by luxurious passenger jets, developed in the 1960s, the way to get to other continents was to go on board of an ocean liner. At the time when Boeing came out with their famous 747 jets, taking a cruise was not as comfortable and enjoyable as it is nowadays. Still quite a number of people kept traveling this way, perhaps because it was the most economical possibility.

After watching Titanic, you not only get a romantic love story that speaks to your heart, but also a quite realistic idea of the situation aboard a cruiser in those days. There was a sharp separation of the decks; the upper class could enjoy luxurious furnishings and high-class entertainment like dancing in the lounges or dining in noble restaurants on the top deck, whereas the lower classes had to stay in small cabins under the deck, with no luxury at all. So a cruise in those days was only an enjoyable event as long as there was money to afford the necessary facilities. Still, if you only wanted to get from A to B, a ticket for an under-deck cabin was a quite inexpensive possibility.

Every shipping company had some cruise liners, the most popular among them being the Queen Mary and the Lusitania. Of course such ships have seen a lot and carried a lot of history. Since there were not too many cruise ships going on journeys across the oceans of the world, there were always enough paying passengers from all classes, which kept the companies in a financially relaxed situation.

With the popular TV-show The Love Boat in the 1970s, cruises were once again viewed as a luxurious form of traveling. And it was the first indication of the American idea that cruise liners could as well be deluxe maritime hotels drifting around the world. On a cruise nobody has to face expectations such as having to be busy; there is nothing else to do than enjoying oneself while lounging around, swimming, playing games, eating in fine restaurants or reading a good book and in between taking pleasure in gazing on the endless ocean around you every now and then. It was then that the success of the shipping companies once again reached the level of the pre-Boeing jet era. More and more people wanted to sail on board of their liners, and the cruising industry has been attracting more and more people since then.

We do not mean to show some implication that cruise have to rule the world or something like that. We only mean to let you know the actual meaning of cruise!

Developing a vision on cruise, we saw the need of providing some enlightenment in cruise for others to learn more about cruise.

The length of a cruise today varies from four days to two or three weeks; ships offer a lot of different possibilities in terms of accommodation, price, square footage of the cabins, and conveniences. As a result, people with different budgets and different expectations can now enjoy a vacation at sea, turning cruises into one of the most popular holiday experiences.
